Humanism is a non-religious ethical philosophy. It is a way of living and thinking about life that focuses on ethics, human rights and a respect for the Earth, nature and all living things. With a focus on reason, the scientific method and compassion, a Humanist believes in creating a more humane world in which respect for life, freedom and responsibility for our actions is necessary for our us to fluorish.
A Humanist ceremony focuses on the beauty and wonder of life and love. A typical ceremony is between 15-25 minutes depending on the readings, music and rituals that the couple wants to incorporate into their ceremony. There is no references to God or religion or to "honour and obey". The focus is instead on values like commitment, love and support. There are three legal requirements for a marriage ceremony in Ontario: Statement of intent, witness affirmation and the declaration of marriage. Other than these three components, the ceremony can be completely customized to the couples liking.
